English as a Second Language
English as a Second Language (ESL) started out as a dream for several of us here at FBC. We saw a need, and we felt we could fulfill a need in our community. We prayed about it, and many others prayed with us for this program. It is definitely a God-lead mission outreach of our church. Five of us went through training for this endeavor. We then put up flyers, a banner, and relied on word of mouth for our students. God provided them. We started out with seven students. We now have twenty-one enrolled and average twelve to sixteen on any given Sunday.
Quickly we saw a need to reach out not only to the students for English needs, but also for spiritual needs. We adopted two Bible verses the first year. This year we have added two more passages of scripture. Our students are eager to read this in English, and now are asking questions about he meanings. We are ministering to their children, as well. Our "crew" consists of Jerry Phillips, Beth Bochette, Francis Gaiter, Bill Wolfe, Lewis Rourk, Jenny Rourk, and Shirley Langley (who is not teaching but lending prayer and moral support). We would welcome others. God is using all of you through prayer, financial, and moral support to reach many people who need our ministry.
